We are madly getting the last bits finished up to be ready for bud break, usually around the second week in May. We are tying canes to the fruiting wires and flail chopping all the prunings in the rows for mulch.
With the help of the tractor and chains we have been pulling up some vines. Some will be replaced by Sauvignon blanc and some to make head room for tractor turn abouts. The picture with Chris has him holding one of his original vines planted in 1974. A Hargrave Cabernet Sauvignon vine which finally gave up the ghost and will be replaced with a new one.
All is quiet. The barrels are sitting peacefully with the only disturbance being a gentle refilling (“topping off”) as the liquid evaporates. Barrels are porous and there is a certain amount of liquid relative to the humidity in the cellar that evaporates during storage. This concentrates the wine and makes it bolder and more expressive.
We finally took on the challenge of cutting up the huge fallen maple tree that went down on Christmas Eve. Most of it is still on the side of the road where it may remain as it seasons. It is very hard to split till it dries out a bit and the logs are too heavy for us old guys to move.
We have three hens sitting on eggs so we should see chicks about the beginning of May; maybe sooner. The picture shows one hen, a buff cochin who doesn't look very happy with the nosy photographer.
Jazz on the Vine ran for 6 weeks this year and was well attended at all the participating vineyards, including The Old Field.
Our new winter digs turned out to be very successful and cozy. Ryan did a fabulous job on the old Carriage house and we were able to host many more folks then the old Tasting Room did. We did miss the smells of the woodstove but not the wood chopping!
You will be seeing a new face pouring your wine. His name is Alex, so be sure to say hello.
We introduced our 2006 Blush de Noir with a new label a month ago. Dekka’s silhouette is gracing the image and $2 from each bottle sale will go to Kent Animal Shelter from whence she came. The wine is dry, fruity and crisp; a brilliantly refreshing summer wine.
For those of you who are 2005 Barrel Fermented Chardonnay fans, we are down to the final 10 cases so garner it while you may. Chris is feeling springy and consequently is putting both the Rooster Tail and his 2001 Merlot on sale from now until May 21 at the Tasting Room only. May Merlot Madness. Both will go for 35% off the regular price.
Perry and I are at work on our little museum which we will open on Mother’s Day Weekend so come and check it out.
And last but not least, we will have a yard sale on Saturday, May 2nd. Maybe your treasure is here waiting for you.
