It has been a wet, cool spring and hopefully will change to dry and warm soon. We are cutting our kickers, the one long cane we left standing up on the vine, to keep the air flow as free as possible. In this weather we are wary of mildew and fungi popping up and want to keep as much air and sun on the leaves and fruit as possible. Wires are being raised and the growth is about two feet off the fruiting wire, growing fast now. We are suckering the bases and disbudding the cordons and canes; redesigning our vines to get the fruit numbers we want and to manage health. The 2 year old Sauvignon blanc vines are doing brilliantly as is the 2 year old Pinot noir. We might pull a small quantity of fruit from them this year.
We continue to sample and top the barrels as they loose some water content to evaporation. We are delighted with the 2007 Pinot and are awaiting the perfect moment to bottle. Then, it will sit till ready; fall 2010 or 2011. Patience is the key. The 2007 Merlot and Cab franc will go through some blending trials as soon as we catch up in the vineyard.
The new chicks are teenagers now and the pecking order is starting to show. Hopefully not too many roosters in the brood. Perry's raspberries faired the winter well and promise to be fruitful.
The vegetable garden is coming along and my hope is to learn to freeze this year. Perry has a great crew who are all engaged in Frisbee Golf. That's what those strange tire structures with chains are for on the property; the "holes".
The tasting barn has seen some Ryan improvements this year. Perry and I have been busy getting our little museum together to show off some of our findings from the barns and house that we are piecing together slowly. So come and ask to take a peek.
